Do momentum indicators actually work?

Mostly yes, but always narrowly. We walk-forward tested 9 momentum and trend-confirmation signals, MACD, rate of change, the Awesome Oscillator, OBV, Chaikin Money Flow, CCI and Aroon among them, across 28 tickers with a 100-run random-entry gauntlet. Eight held a real edge, which makes this the most reliable family we tested by survival rate. But no momentum signal held on more than 7 of 28 tickers, and the one classic that fires rarely, Wilder's DMI cross, busted.

What counts as a momentum signal

Everything here waits for an indicator to confirm that momentum has turned positive, then rides it. Two flavors: signal and zero-line crosses on price-based indicators, MACD, rate of change, the Awesome Oscillator, CCI; and confirmation from volume or trend structure, OBV crossing its average, Chaikin Money Flow turning positive, Aroon-Up overtaking Aroon-Down. Every version also required price above its 200-day average, so these fire inside existing uptrends.

Zero-line and signal crosses that held an edge

SetupTickerReturnSharpeWin rateEdge held on
Awesome Oscillator zero cross QQQ +166.8% 0.92 40.4% 7 / 28
MACD cross above 200 SMA AAPL +304.3% 1.36 49.2% 5 / 28
ROC momentum turn GOOGL +185.3% 0.86 42.1% 4 / 28
CCI zero-line cross AAPL +380.2% 1.30 43.9% 4 / 28
MACD zero-line cross QQQ +137.7% 0.92 48.0% 3 / 28

The Awesome Oscillator's zero cross is the breadth leader of the whole momentum family at 7 of 28. The rest cluster at 3 to 5 tickers: real, measurable, and narrow. Return shown is a representative index or large-cap.

Volume and trend confirmation signals that held an edge

SetupTickerReturnSharpeWin rateEdge held on
OBV trend confirmation GOOGL +243.8% 0.96 36.2% 4 / 28
CMF zero cross GLD +120.9% 0.86 48.6% 4 / 28
Aroon trend GLD +85.3% 0.70 44.7% 4 / 28

The volume-based confirmations, OBV and Chaikin Money Flow, and the Aroon trend cross each held an edge on exactly 4 of 28 tickers. Consistent, but nobody's everywhere signal.

The classic that failed: Wilder's DMI cross

The directional system straight from Wilder's 1978 book, buying when +DI crosses above -DI with ADX confirming, is the family's one bust, and it failed the same way every famous bust in our library failed. Its best showing beat 98 of 100 random entries on its best ticker, but that rested on 10 trades in a decade with only 2 of 4 test periods positive. The signals that survived this guide fire regularly; the DMI cross with an ADX filter fires so rarely that its edge cannot be separated from luck.

The pattern: reliable survival, narrow reach

Momentum signals had the highest survival rate of any family we tested, 8 of 9, and the likely reason is mechanical: they fire often enough to clear the sample-size bar that killed the Golden Cross, RSI(14) oversold, and the DMI cross. But surviving is not the same as being broad. The family's best breadth, 7 of 28 for the Awesome Oscillator, would rank mid-table among dip buys. Momentum confirmation seems to add a real but modest edge on the right ticker, and nothing anywhere else.

How to use this

  • Treat momentum indicators as confirmation, not as an edge by themselves; even the best held on only 7 of 28 tickers.
  • Prefer the frequent firers, zero-line and signal crosses, over slow filtered systems like the DMI cross; frequency is what makes an edge measurable.
  • Expect the trend-following profile: win rates near 40 percent and returns carried by a few strong runs.
  • Do not stack redundant confirmations. MACD, ROC, and AO measure nearly the same thing; a second copy adds lag, not edge.
  • Check the per-ticker matrix in each full report; with edges of 3 to 7 tickers, the ticker choice decides most of the outcome.

Common questions

Do momentum indicators actually work?

Eight of the nine we tested held a real walk-forward edge, the best survival rate of any family. But every edge was narrow: the broadest, the Awesome Oscillator zero cross, held on 7 of 28 tickers.

Does MACD actually work?

Narrowly, in our test. The MACD signal-line cross above a 200-day trend filter held an edge on 5 of 28 tickers, and the MACD zero-line cross on 3 of 28. Real where it works, absent elsewhere.

What is the best momentum indicator?

By tested breadth, the Awesome Oscillator zero cross, with an edge on 7 of 28 tickers. MACD above a 200-day filter followed at 5 of 28.

Do volume indicators like OBV and Chaikin Money Flow work?

Both held a real but narrow edge in our test, 4 of 28 tickers each, with the trend-following profile of modest win rates and occasional big winners.

Does the ADX/DMI system still work?

It busted in our test. Requiring ADX above 25 plus a +DI/-DI cross produced only 10 trades in a decade on its best ticker, far too few to prove an edge, and it cleared our bar on zero of 28 tickers.
